Lassithi

The area had been settled for the first time during Neolithic times and reached its highest development during the times of the Minoan civilization. The town of Elounda has kept its ancient name almost unchanged, being built on the ruins of the old town Olounda, one of the most important towns of ancient Crete. The ruins of Olounda are preserved in the sea and can be clearly seen when the water is smooth.

In Agios Nikolaos, a small cosmopolitan harbor town, you can stroll down to the flagstone square and take your coffee in one of the many cafeterias, pay a visit to the Byzantine churches and to the archeological or folklore museum, as well as the nature preserve of Almyrou.
